Sound Recording: Baby Hairy Woodpeckers

Recorded on May 30, 2017 Recorded in Duluth, Minnesota, Western Waterfront Trail

We were on our Duluth Audubon spring warbler walk at the Western Waterfront Trail this morning when we came upon a woodpecker nest with the nestlings calling away. A Hairy Woodpecker had been sitting on a branch right beside the nest, and young were calling away, so I made a short recording with my iPhone’s “Voice Memos” app. It’s VERY noisy in town, so I deleted the lowest frequencies in this file to get rid of the traffic rumble. The woodpecker in the accompanying iTunes photo is not the bird we observed at the nest—I neglected to take a photo.

Red-winged Blackbirds calling in the background.
