Black-faced Ibis

Theristicus melanopis Order: Pelecaniformes Family: Threskiornithidae (Ibises and Spoonbills)

This species includes the Andean Ibis, which some experts believe should be split into its own species. I saw this the day I saw my lifer Andean Condor, in Ecuador at very high elevation. This bird was at a distance and I was both lightheaded and shivering, so tragically my photo is abysmal. But oh, well–I at least saw it!

This uncommon species is restricted to altitudes of about 9,800 to 16,400 ft in the Andean highlands of Bolivia, Peru and Ecuador.
