This lovely, large hummer, mostly found in Mexico and Belize, extends its breeding range very slightly into South Texas along the Rio Grande, and some winter more broadly in south Texas and along the Gulf, especially in Louisiana. The more alert birders are to the possibilities of “odd” hummers straying, the more we’re finding.

One healthy banded male Buff-bellied Hummingbird was recaptured at a Texas banding station when he was more than 11 years old; the band number was recorded and the bird released.
