Anas penelope
Order: Anseriformes
Family: Anatidae (Ducks, Geese, and Waterfowl)
Eurasian Wigeons turn up every now and then, usually within a flock of American Wigeons,, especially during migration, here and there in North America, especially in coastal states. I saw my first on March 20, 1977, at the Schoeneberg Marsh near Arlington, Wisconsin. That one remained my only sighting for a long time and, until April 2026 when I saw one at the Walden Reservoir in Colorado, was the only one I’d ever seen away from a coast. Usually they’ve been at a great distance, identified through a spotting scope. My only photos are from Merritt Island in Florida.
