This splendid bird of Central and South America eats fish, crustaceans, water beetles and dragonfly larvae, adult dragonflies, grasshoppers, and other prey from the water or nearby wetlands. It typically hunts alone, standing hunched in shallow pools or wet areas of forest while it waits for prey.
