Discosura popelairii
Order: Apodiformes
Family: Trochilidae (Hummingbirds)
This tiny, stunning hummingbird is found only along the eastern slope of the Andes in Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru (and possibly Bolivia). It feeds mostly in the canopy, and lower to the ground spends much more time at verbena than at hummingbird feeders. Males can be 4.5 inches long including their long crest and tail extensions; females, who lack the crest and have a much shorter tail, are only 3 inches long.
