Dryocopus pileatus
Order: Piciformes
Family: Picidae (Woodpeckers)
North America’s largest surviving woodpecker depends on old trees for grubs; many individuals have also figured out how to exploit bird feeding stations. This is one of my favorite species for many reasons. They live in our neighborhood and spend a lot of time in our backyard, which is why I have so many close up photos.
